Acme: home of good pizza and awesome cajun tater tots. Oh, and an amazing array of microbrews to which bartender Don Bush would love to introduce you. In fact, one of his favorite shifts is Sunday night, where microbrews are on special. Name your favorite beer, and Bush is sure to turn you on to a new microbrew with a similar, yet elevated, craft taste.

We caught up with Bush to get his take on the bar, patrons, and life in general. The following is an edited transcript of the conversation.

CITY: How long have you been at Acme?

DON BUSH: Nine years, five as a bartender.

For someone who has never been to Acme, describe the bar.

Laid-back atmosphere, great drink specials, awesome selection of microbrews, and the food is great. And it's inexpensive.

Did you bartender anywhere before Acme?

Jack Ryan's on Atlantic Avenue.

What's the best thing about the job?

Well, the money, of course. But also the people.

What's the worst part about the job?

Some of the people, especially bad tippers, and those with bad attitudes.

What is a good tip?

A dollar a drink.

What is Acme's best-selling drink?

Guinness. Poured correctly, of course.

What drink do you make the best?

It's tough. My main shift I work Saturdays and Sundays, and the Sunday shift is $2.50 microbrews. So I can pop the top good. I did invent a shot called the Sunday Morning Shot.

What's in that?

Absolut Ruby Red, sour mix, or lemonade with a sugared rim. It tastes like sugared grapefruit, which reminds me of Sunday morning.

What's your favorite drink?

Stoli and soda, with or without a lime.

How can someone catch your eye at a bar?

Cash [laughs]. Cash and patience. Basically, cash and a good attitude.

So has anyone given you any trouble?

Always.

What do you consider trouble?

Banging on the bar with their glass, or putting their hand up and calling me over. My favorite is when they put their hand up, call me over and then say, "This guy needs a drink, they need to order something." That's my favorite. Really? So, are you buying it for them? No? Then shush.

What's your favorite bar outside of Acme?

Sports Page.

Right next door? Why?

‘Cause it's owned by the same person, so I know everyone there.

So how did you get so much knowledge on craft beers?

It's a personal interest, really.

Let's talk about your t-shirts. I've seen you in some pretty funny ones. What's your favorite?

I actually like my staff Acme t-shirt that says, "We accept what you've become."

So if you weren't a bartender, what would do?

I would be a bartender. 'Cause I love it, it's like being a rock star without having to have any talent.

Anything else you'd like to add?

What's the difference between God and a bartender?

What?

God doesn't think he's a bartender.

Acme Bar & Pizza is located at 495 Monroe Ave., and is open Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-2 a.m.; Saturday-Sunday noon-2 a.m. 271-2263, myspace.com/acmebarandpizza.
