BAR SHOTS: Georgia's open, Black Pearl closed

The bar beneath a bridge

Georgia's is a bar beneath a bridge (kind of). It's tucked next to and under the 490 ramps, between Geva Theatre (on Woodbury) and the Central Library (on South Ave). You might pass over it all the time, never noticing the neon "Open" sign in the window.

If you go, know that it's on a dead-end street (but is still considered South Ave.), and that you'll find a nice, big outdoors patio (decorated for Halloween when we were there), which looks up at the historic building to the "Fine Furniture" sign painted on the brick god knows when.

A few pairs of women were at the bar last Thursday night, and the super-friendly bartender (who served us fresh popcorn and tasty drinks) said that Georgia's opened on Pride Weekend back in July. It's gaining a presence on the scene, hosting live music, DJs (including CHROMA), happy hours, and more. The bar is spacious, a few pub tables dot the place, and there's a pool table in the next room. The men's bathroom has a green light above it, the women's a red, and Guinness posters adorn the walls. A funny smell was in the air when we were there; it wasn't food (no grill yet), but a pumpkin being carved on the floor behind us, in preparation for the next day's party.

Georgia's is located at 240 South Avenue, and you can reach the bar at 232-3960.

Black Pearl closed

This Meigs Street favorite used to be the place to go for consistent buck-a-can PBRs, a decent jukebox, laid-back atmosphere, and some conversation with whoever was behind the bar. South Wedge locals stopped in, with their friends or their dogs, just to hang out for a bit. We recently found out that the bar is closed, and there's a "for rent" sign in the window. No one could be reached for comment. But it's sad. Under a different name - Dicky's - the place was the oldest bar in Rochester.

Woody's closed

This Monroe Ave sports bar was just remodeled last year, but nonetheless closed its doors in late September. If you're headed that way and in need of some sports action and food, you can head down the street to the Sports Page or Acme instead. Woody's II (2758 W. Henrietta Rd., 424-6440) remains open.

Beer Pong Tournament

It's not uncommon to play beer pong in basements, living rooms, kitchens, or front lawns. But lately the sport - can we call it that? - has taken to bars. This Saturday, November 8, Two89 (289 Alexander St., 325-2890) hosts a day of the World Beer Pong Tournament. For a $25 entry fee, you get a t-shirt, free beer for the duration of the game, and a chance at first prize (a spring break vacation), or filthy lucre for second, third, or fourth places. The games start at 3 p.m., but show up an hour early to sign in and get some practice under your belt. Go to worldpongtour.com for details. And everyone told you all those Friday nights playing beer pong were ill-spent...

Fall Zoo Brew

Take two fun things - the zoo, beer - add ‘em together, and you get the Seneca Park Zoo's Zoo Brew, which happens this Friday, November 7. It's the first fall version ever, and includes dinner, live music from the band CoMoTioN, and a cash bar. Tickets cost $25-$30, and include two free drink coupons. The Zoo Brew runs 6-9 p.m. at the Seneca Park Zoo (2222 St. Paul Blvd, 336-7201, senecaparkzoo.org). The zoo's website notes that the first winter Zoo Brew sold out; you might want to get your tickets for this one early.

Regarding the closing on the Black Pearl. It's a real shame cause this was a nice place and the drinks were reasonable. However, it was run into the ground. Hopefully, someone with a little more business sense will reopen this place and keep it going. Its hard to imagine that someone could screw this establishment with it being around so long.
