CITY INSPECTIONS: City must look at private homes, too

Regarding a website comment on the city's inspection of rental properties: I am not a slum landlord. I take pride in my property, not only for the safety of my tenant but of myself and anyone going by the property. I just had my house inspected by the city, and was told that I exceeded the code.

I live here, and some of the rentals as well as private homes should be fixed up. There are two rental properties on my street that the city does nothing about, but in the past I have had minor violations cited, like the outside steps not being painted because of the rain. With the other two rentals, there were railings missing for over two years, and one has had siding missing for over five years, and the city does nothing.

There are private homes that have had a handrail missing, and the paint on both is in bad condition. So the city should go after the private homeowners that need work done on their property and leave the landlords alone except the slum landlords. It really is a waste of time. Until the city starts to fix up these houses and puts the cost on the owners' tax bill, they are not going to do anything, which brings down the value for people trying to sell.
