JAZZ: Gene Bertoncini (7/25)
By Ron Netsky on Jul. 23rd, 2008
Gene Bertoncini's new CD, "Concerti," is among the most gorgeous albums of the year. Bertoncini, who is one of the greatest acoustic jazz guitarists playing today, is joined by a string quartet and bass, playing arrangements written by colleagues at the Eastman School of Music, where he's taught for over four decades. On it are beautiful renditions of "How Insensitive" and "East Of The Sun," and a spectacular medley of Rodrigo's "Conceirto De Aranjuez," with Chick Corea's extrapolation on it, "Spain." Bertoncini, a great player in any setting, will play solo in the acoustically perfect Kilbourn Hall.
