If you have taken in a jazz event in Rochester, chances are you've heard Mike Melito. The ubiquitous drummer is everywhere, from the jam sessions at the Rochester International Jazz Festival to the Strathallan every weekend. A first-call drummer, Melito has also backed stars like Benny Golson and James Moody at the RIJF. The title of his fourth album says it all; Melito is not out to pierce the avant-garde. He loves the hard bop of the late-1950's, when Hank Mobley, Tadd Dameron, and Sonny Clark were writing the tunes and the greatest generation of instrumentalists played them. He's assembled an outstanding band --- Grant Stewart (sax), John Swana (trumpet), Paul Hofmann (piano), Neal Minor (bass), and Bob Sneider (guitar) --- to interpret tunes by Mobley, Dameron, and Clark and some engaging new ones by band members. They are full of catchy, full-tilt heads and inventive solos and all are flawlessly supported by the Melito's rock-solid drumming.
