SPECIAL EVENT: Relic Tour (9/26-9/28)

Among the cremated ashes of Buddhist masters, people have found variously sized pieces of pearl-like shells. These are plucked and proclaimed relics, then treasured highly for their spiritual meaning. The Maitreya Project has amassed a large collection of these relics, and the project is bringing the relics on tour across the world before enshrining them forever in a 500-foot bronze statue being built in Kushinagar in northern India.

Some believe that the relics embody the master's spiritual qualities, and that the relic is deliberately produced at the time of death. You can decide for yourself this weekend, when the tour comes to the Colgate Divinity School, 1100 S Goodman St. There's an opening ceremony on Friday, September 26, at 7 p.m., then the relics are on view Saturday, September 27, and Sunday, September 28, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Go to maitreyaproject.org for more information, or call the Colgate School at 340-9643. The event is free, though donations are welcome.
