"The Stories Behind American Songs" lecture takes place Saturday, August 9 at the Lift Bridge Book Shop.
Once while listening to WXXI's radio show "Fascinating Rhythm," I heard Michael Lasser tell the story behind "Mack the Knife." It was always a great swing dance tune to me, and while not really knowing all the lyrics, I assumed it had something to do with mobsters and molls and such. Lasser shattered that illusion. While I don't remember the finer details, he said that the song is really about what would happened to traveling hobos if they were caught stealing. Who knew there was an ethics code for hobos?
Lasser (who also reviews local theater for City) will discuss more of "The Stories Behind American Songs" during his lecture at Lift Bridge Book Shop on Saturday, August 9, at 1 p.m. Lift Bridge is located at 45 Main Street in Brockport.
