POP/ROCK: Cake (9/28)

Cake's songs "Going the Distance" and "Short Skirt Long Jacket" - catchy whether you like them or not - were all I'd really heard from this band before the recent release of some of the group's B-sides and rarities. On it, the band covers songs by Black Sabbath, Buck Owens, and Barry White. This sort of genre-mixing, if carried over to the live show, should prove interesting. In the end, Cake maintains a signature sound that has as much to do with the vocals - usually delivered in a not-unpleasant monotone - as with that funky bass.
