It's a common rock ‘n' roll story: a musician uses deep, dark misery to inspire him (or her) to new creative heights. But in Jack Antonoff's case, it's definitely applicable. The lead singer and songwriter of the New Jersey quintet Steel Train experienced two tragic deaths, the break-up of a long-time relationship, and the onset of a panic disorder, all of which drove him into a severe depression. But he used that pain to produced Steel Train's second album, "Trampoline" - a life-affirming disc marked by plenty of quirks and hooks - which in turn improved his own health.

Steel Train plays Saturday, November 22, 6:30 p.m., at Water Street Music Hall, 204 N Water St. $10-$12. 325-5600.
