METAL: Today is the Day (11/12)

Nashville's Today Is The Day pushed the envelope so far to the extreme end of the spectrum that other metal bands still struggle to catch up more than a decade later. Simply put, this is music at its most hateful, anguished, and barren. Once a post-metal band with arty and electronic leanings, TITD eventually morphed into an all-out grind assault, a flurry of sound so furiously overdriven that it almost physically encroaches on you. And it rocks. For all of the homicidal venom that bandleader Steve Austin spews in his music, he's earned all the critical raves he has regularly receives.

Today Is The Day plays with Weedeater and Orordruin Wednesday, November 12, 8 p.m. at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Ave. $8-$12. 454-2966, bugjar.com.
