ROCK: Earl Greyhound (11/4)

Recalling the most powerful aspects of soul and gospel and mashing them up with the rawness of vintage rock, Earl Greyhound comes on swinging like a contemporary cross between Cream and Sly & the Family Stone. Songwriters Matt White and Kamara Thomas' vocal harmonies act as a kind of spark against the hard-driving distorted guitar/fuzz bass/Bonham-esque drums that ooze from the band like a flood of gasoline; once they combine, the band positively burns it up. Obvious traces of Zeppelin, the Allmans, and a slew of others from both sides of the rock-soul divide can be heard, but Earl Greyhound's enthusiasm and flair makes it all feel fresh again.

Earl Greyhound plays Tuesday, November 4, 7 p.m. at the Club at Water Street, 204 N Water St. $10. 325-5600.
