All hail piano rock, a genre that's rare enough to never wear out its welcome. Something about the strong presence of the piano captures the attention even in music that you might otherwise dismiss. Jack's Mannequin lies on the totally blatant side of commercial, but that's no surprise considering that pianist/bandleader Andrew McMahon comes to us from the pop-punkish band Something Corporate. Southern California has contributed more than its fair share of candy-coated dross to the airwaves, its pop-punk hordes armed with slurring guitars and vocal melodies that can cause an instant-death sugar OD on contact. McMahon, a product of this environment, can only help himself so much. Still, his piano anchors the power chords that would wash from the memory otherwise.
