FOLK: Julia Nunes (1/3)

Man, the kids and their YouTube these days. Rochester chick with pick Julia Nunes' talent as a songwriter, guitarist, and ukuleleist (that's what I said) is matched only by a condition she suffers from known medically as "terminus wise assus." With gorgeous pipes that rival the dame that sings when it's all over, lush chording ability, and lyrics full of insight and melody, Nunes already had our attention. But just dig those internet videos as the young lady attacks songs by Destiny's Child, The Killers, Ben Folds, and Weezer with her trusty Uke. Yes, there's tons of irony and it's funny as hell, but Nunes' talent even makes parody somehow beautiful.

Nunes plays with Lauren O'Connell, Cu Cu, and Kirk Stevens Thursday, January 3, at Fairport Village Coffee, 6 N Main St, Fairport, 7:30 p.m., $3, 377-5880.

Sergio, Chile.

Sir or Madam:

I object to your use of the term Parody."

Singing to an ululele accompanyment does not--in itself--constitute a "parody" : Al Yankovich with a ukulele might, and Tiny Tim's performances certainly did, but not La Nunes's (nor did Arthur Godfrey's or Ukulele Ike's--AKA Jimmeny Cricket) This woman's covers are well polished, performed, and produced. She's serious, albeit cheerful. Write about classical music, if you're seriously concerned about how grimly serious the artist is.

The ukulele is a cheap, readily learned and hardy little musical instrument. Many early music programs are now issuing ukuleles instead of the traditional recorder. They're just so much more fun! And, seriously, the kids learn lots more music, such as chord structure. It ain't a grand piano, but it deserves respect.

In the future, you will see a load of young people performing with the ukulele. Four string is not a negative (e.g. the violin). View them objectively.

Thank you,

Terry Miller

Terry Miller: I'm totally with you. I can't see why you would call her covers parody and IMHO her best work are originals like "Into the Sunshine" (If it was up to me it would be a radio hit, it's way better than the shit we got to put up with on radio and MTV). I think she sound a lot like the dutch singer Anouk.

Julia Nunes is an amazing talent and I'm definitely a fan for life. I just discovered her the other day on Youtube. Nunes was featured for a song call "Into the Sunshine" (one of her best original songs), and has nearly hit the 1 Million views mark. Yep, I believe we are watching the beginnings of a stellar career! Rock on Julia!
