By swapping out some down 'n' dirty Delta blues for more of a jam band groove, The North Mississippi All-Stars went from playing Junior Kimbrough-type juke joints and dives around the south to festival stages like Bonnaroo.
Brothers Cody and Luther Dickinson - offspring of famed producer Jim Dickinson - have grown up around this stuff. There's Dixie mud in their blood and Luther's guitar drives the whole affair with his Duane Allman-esque warm, buttery tone. The band jams and grooves in a nouveau-hippy kinda way, but the cool thing is the blues are still there - obscure, dead end, desperate, and dangerous blues like R.L. and Junior and Otha and T-Model.
North Mississippi All-Stars play Party in the Park Thursday, August 2, at the High Falls Festival Site, 5:30 p.m., free
