FOLK: Great Blue Heron Festival (7/6-7/8)

Something's going on with folk music these days. Call it the back-swing of alt-country, but bands like North Carolina's The Avett Brothers have found a winning formula. The trio melds its folk and bluegrass instrumentation with a punk and indie-rock attitude. After seven years of plugging away, the band's newest record, "Emotionalism," has finally garnered the group some late-night fame on Conan O'Brien. The band is tight, poppy, and overflowing with crisp vocal harmonies - perfect for the various summer festivals on their schedule.

The Great Blue Heron Festival features The Avett Brothers, along with Donna the Buffalo, The Horse Flies, Sim Redmond Band, Slo-Mo and many more at Wait Corners Road in Sherman (near Buffalo). Music starts at 3 p.m. Friday, July 6, and runs until dusk on Sunday, July 8. Tickets cost $22-$30 (day pass), $61-$70 (weekend pass). For tickets call 716-484-7070; for information call 716-487-1781. For a full schedule, go to greatblueheron.com.

Also performing at the Great Blue Heron Festival is Rochester's own RedLine Zydeco, with special guest Willis Prudhomme, 76-year old zydeco master from Kinder, Louisiana. They'll play a set Saturday afternoon, then tear it up with the all-night zydeco dance that lasts till sunrise on Sunday.
