Together for 15 years now, Peachy Nietzsches has become something of a local institution. Unfortunately, that means it's easy to take the band for granted. But if you stop and think about all the changes in local music since '92, Peachy Nietzsches' stunning versatility makes a certain sense. Watching the band glide between various styles, it's as if the seven musicians onstage have been stewing in their own creative juices and absorbing bits of the collective musical culture all along. On paper, Peachy Nietzsches is set up more or less like a rock band - two guitars, bass, drums, keys, accordion, banjo, etc. - but it executes with rubbery, shape-shifting grace more like a rock orchestra akin to local peers like Hypnotic Clambake or the late great Colorblind James. Peachys strikes a fine balance between its goofy, down-to-earth sense of humor and its penchant for grand melodies. New album "Misunderestimated," a live show recorded in January at the Bug Jar and given the full-mix treatment by Nic Marinaccio, begins with a big-rock moment worthy of any of your classic ‘70s double-live albums. Appropriately enough, the kindred spirits and fellow scene veterans in NOD join Peachys to celebrate the album's release.
Peachy Nietzsches, NOD, and Old Boy play Saturday, June 9, at the Bug Jar, 219 Monroe Avenue, 454-2966, at 10 p.m., $6.
