It's probably going to be a while before you hear another band that's as consistently listenable as this Chapel Hill five-piece that includes the standard guitars-bass-drums setup as well as cello and lots of percussion. Over the course of the band's two EPs and two full-lengths, several obvious comparisons to other indie bands jump out at you. But what's more impressive (and important) is how Schooner can switch styles with so much agility that you barely notice. Just about every single song has irresistibly catchy hooks, and the band plays with a natural ease that, rather than make you want to get up and sing along, it washes over you like the feeling you get sinking into your most comfortable easy chair. Shades of '50s pop recur, demonstrating Schooner's top-notch skills and peppering its otherwise indie-flavored sound. As far as local openers go, you couldn't ask for a better fit than country-fried tunesmith Will Veeder and his supergroup cohorts in Hinkley.
