ECLECTIC: Electric Fuzz (2/11)

If there's one thing that cellist/composer Lauren Radnofsky and composer/conductor Brad Lubman --- the co-artistic directors of locally based ensemble Electric Fuzz --- want you to take from their performances above all else, it's a sense of being welcome. While genre-blending is nothing new, it can come across as stilted, unnatural, and overly concept-driven. Not so here, which is no small feat considering that Electric Fuzz's stylistic sprawl encompasses elements of indie rock, minimalism, new music, electronica, free jazz, and prog. The program for this performance features young composers from Eastern Europe and downtown New York (four of which will be in attendance, including Bang On A Can co-founder David Lang). Fans of everything from Zappa to Topographic Oceans-era Yes to Stravinsky to Reich to avant-garde film scores to Aphex Twin will all find something to feast their ears on. Kudos to Lubman and Radnofsky for their continuing efforts to make conservatory-borne inspiration accessible to all.

Electric Fuzz performs Sunday, February 11, at the Village Gate atrium, 274 North Goodman Street, 271-3354, at 8 p.m. Admission is free but a donation is suggested. A post-show meet-and-greet with the artists takes place at Bodhi's Lounge. www.bopshop.com/events.
