If you were among those knocked out by Rian Johnson's smart 2006 filmmaking debut (and one of my all-time faves) "Brick," in which pulpy noir dialogue bulleted without irony from the mouths of teenagers, then you might be a little surprised at the whimsical construct of Johnson's sophomore effort, an overly quirky romantic caper called "The Brothers Bloom." The perpetually sad-eyed Adrien Brody and the effortlessly charismatic Mark Ruffalo star as con men, their latest and supposedly final mark a lonely, peculiar heiress (Rachel Weisz) whose hobby is collecting hobbies and who throws herself with gusto into the possibility of adventure.

A luscious dream cast - including the wily Austrian character actor Maximiliam Schell and Oscar nominee Rinko Kinkuchi ("Babel") - enjoying believable chemistry as they double-cross each other around the globe goes a very long way here, as does the dual ocular pleasures of Steve Yedlin's cinematography and Beatrix Aruna Pasztor's anachronistic yet somehow appropriate wardrobe design. But with its preciously arranged dioramas, blatant symbolism, not-so-subconscious daddy issues, and plot contrivances that lack a warm, engaging truth, "The Brothers Bloom" encroaches on territory that no longer seems terribly fresh. The good news is that if you've been jonesing for a new Wes Anderson movie, look no further.
