MOVIES: "Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey"
By Eric Rezsnyak on Apr. 9th, 2008
Since it debuted more than a decade ago, the dance troupe STOMP has become a worldwide phenomenon. The show - based around the percussive properties of everyday items and the human body - has been staged around the world, featured on television, and once again, projected on the giant screen at the Rochester Museum & Science Center's Strasenburgh Planetarium.
On Friday, April 11, "Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey" re-opens at the planetarium; when it was shown previously it became one of the venue's most popular giant-screen films. The film is directed by the original creators of Stomp, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. Instead of merely re-creating the Stomp stage experience on the (very) big screen, it iexplores the music, dance, and rhythm of the planet.
Footage follows performers from Asia, Brazil, England, India, South Africa, Spain, and the United States. Among the groups featured are Les Percussions de Guinee, master drummers from Guinea; the American Indian Dance Theatre from Red Rock Canyon; Indian musician Shafaatullah Khan; Spanish flamenco dancer Eva Yerbabuena; and many others.
"Pulse" begins its ongoing return engagement Friday at 2 p.m., and continues this week Saturday at 2, 4 & 8 p.m., Sunday at 1, 2 & 4 p.m., and Monday-Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m., 2 & 4 p.m. Tickets cost $7-$9. For more information visit rmsc.org.
