Following Nicole's winning sweep last episode, coming in first on both go-sees and the photo shoot, Erin made some nasty remarks about Nicole's personality, claiming that our favorite bloody eyeball sufferer has interpersonal issues. Erin argued that she has a much more identifiable personality for young women. If they're wannabe sociopaths, maybe. But if Erin really thinks she's somehow likable or relatable, I'm hoping her opinion has been altered by watching herself on this show. Because seriously, girl is just as awkward and irritating as she makes Nicole out to be.
Happily, Rae and Nicole seemed to be bonding a bit, and Rae added that Nicole has started coming out of her shell, which was exemplified by a hair-whipping contest. Erin won. Bitch.
And then, our Very Special Moment of the episode. While reading a new TyraMail, Laura revealed that she is dyslexic, and that people have always called her stupid. Aw! I love Laura! I think she is incredibly charming, and I would like to invite both her and her grandma, Wanda Sue, over for dinner. It makes me sad that people have been calling her stupid all her life, especially since I knew a few dyslexic kids in school and they had to suffer through the same humiliation. Poor thing.
Then the girls were shuttled over to the studios of entertainment news show "The Insider," and saw a faux interview between the boring blonde host and Ant, irritating comedian and host of VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club." The girls learned how to do interviews, which the show tried to connect with modeling via C5's Bre and Kim, who have both gone on to fairly successful careers as TV personalities. The girls had to interview Ant as he portrayed a variety of difficult characters, intentionally trying to throw them off. Some of them did really well, while others - especially poor Nicole - were disasters. Then fucking Ann Shoket form Seventeen came in, and the girls were told they had to interview Jessica Lowndes, the awesome Adrianna from "90210," which I found super exciting. This is my life. That's sadder than Laura's dyslexia.
The twist to the Lowndes challenge was that midway through, the teleprompter went blank, leaving the girls to fend for themselves. Jennifer did a really great job in the beginning, and recovered extremely well after the teleprompter blip. Sundai interrupted her subject way too much. Laura was a babble-mouthed mess when the teleprompter was on, and then totally froze when it went blank, and then she CURSED. Oh, LAURA! Erin did quite well throughout. Brittany could barely get the words out and was overthinking, while Rae was slouched throughout, and got the dreaded boring note from Shoket. Nicole was a bit harsh in her questions, including asking Jessica if she's ever had kids in real life (her "90210" character is a teenage mother). Oh, Nicole. Ultimately Erin won, the prize being a fashion shoot for Seventeen, and she brought Jennifer and Rae with her.
Then the girls got a surprise at home: a TyraMail that they'd be shooting their first CoverGirl commercials, and even more than that, they had to WRITE the copy for the commercial themselves. This freaked Laura out, since dyslexics have issues with memorization. Erin was a smug little bitch, finishing her copy in no time and then making a production of being totally done. Meanwhile, Nicole practiced her ass off.
At the shoot, last cycle's undeserving winner, Teyonasaurus, was there to greet the girls. You know what's interesting? There have been no My Life as a Cover Girl commercials featuring America's Next Top Velociraptor, and those have been a staple of this show since Cycle 4. Every winner since Eva has done them; that's basically the extent of that $100,000 Cover Girl contract they win. I wonder if they opted not to do them with Teyona because she's so useless, and when she opens her creepy mouth she sounds like total bumpkin? Even when she was shilling Cover Girl products to the other girls she was terrible. Worst winner ever? Well, it's a toss up between her and Saleisha.
Nigel directed the commercial, and surprisingly, Nicole didn't bomb. In fact, after a couple rough takes she ended up killing it. Sundai overdid it and looked deranged. She came off a used car salesman. Jennifer looked absolutely incredible in her commercial, and she rocked it like a pro. Laura decided to get through it by creating a story about buying Cover Girl make-up for her little sister. She kept stuttering and falling over her lines, and stopping and starting, but was really cute and charming throughout. Brittany was like a robot, which is exactly how Nigel referred to her. Rae was unconvincing and stiff; she came off looking like an airhead, rolling her eyes all around the screen.
And then there was Erin, who looked better than she ever has, but started stumbling over her words and had a meltdown right before our very eyes. This kind of made sense to me. Even though she's normally a force to be reckoned with, she's so competitive that you can tell she would be exceptionally hard on herself. She kept crying, requiring make-up touch-ups, and she was clearly not listening to anything Nigel had to say, spiraling into this petulant tangle of frustration and nerves. While it lacked the dizzying hilarity of Cycle 10's Italian commercial (nothing will ever top Dominique shouting "Brazilia!" or Lauren's incredibly awkward takes), watching her fall apart was one of the more compelling commercial segments in this show, I'd say.
At panel, Kim Kardashian was the guest judge. In an instant Teyona magically became the second-most useless person in this episode. (Seriously, can someone explain to me the entire Kardashian thing? Why are these people famous?)
Jennifer was up first, and her take was a little fidgety and cutesy, but she had great energy and delivery. Laura struggled to get the words out over her accent, and stopped and started quite a bit. The judges were fairly kind to her, and pointed out that although she wasn't great at the commercial, she takes great pictures. Brittany's commercial was better than I figured, but it was pinched and nasal, and it did seem really rehearsed, and the judges were pretty rough on her. Nicole's commercial was TOTALLY GREAT! Who saw that one coming? She was relatable, sweet, and looked phenomenal. And yet the judges were relatively cool toward her. The fuck?! Rae's commercial was super bad. She seemed bored, distracted, and hesitant. It didn't work at all. Sundai's energy was manic, and her voice suggested bad announcer. Erin looked crazy at panel, and broke down before her commercial even ran. It was bad - stop and start, she leaned against the backdrop at points, and looked pissed for most of it. However, she also had a striking resemblance to Mena Suvari.
Callouts: Jennifer (bullshit; should have been Nicole), Nicole, Brittany, Sundai, Laura (dodged THAT bullet!), leaving Erin and Rae. From the commercial performance, Erin should go home. But I also think Erin has more potential, as Rae has been sliding for weeks now. She was amazing the first week but has done very little since. And it saddens me, because she's gorgeous and her story is inspiring. She's just been like wallpaper since Episode 2. And ultimately, that's what got Rae kicked off, that lack of spark. I had her picked as my fave from the minute the pre-season pics were released. So that's a huge bummer.
Next: The girls are so damned nasty that Tyra quarantines the house. In other words: pack your bags, y'all, we're going...somewhere. (OK, it's Hawaii. Not exactly overseas, but times is hard, even for Tyra Banks.)
