Now THAT was satisfying. Although I haven't been blogging about it for weeks, I have been following Bravo's "Fashion Show." I wonder if I'm the only person in America who is. I don't think the show's doing terribly well. It has zero buzz, and I noticed the network pulled a fast one a few weeks ago, scheduling a new episode a day early in the "Top Chef Masters" spot. I assume that was an effort to trick people into watching this "Project Runway" replacement. I have a couple thoughts as to why America seems indifferent to the show, but for now I would just like to say: Thank god motherfucking Johnny got eliminated. It took long enough.
We were down to the Final 5 - Anna, James-Paul, Reco, Daniella, and Johnny - and after the final Harper's Bazaar Mini-Challenge (create a draped dress using only two yards of fabric and 12 pins) the final elimination challenge tasked the designers to create a sumptuous evening gown featuring Swarovski crystals. Not the most high-concept challenge, but that's good. Fewer constraints meant that we got to see the designers' unfettered perspective before going on to their final collections.
The results were largely impressive. Anna went with the bold choice of using a floral print - you don't often see prints on the red carpet, as the editor from Harper's pointed out at panel - and smartly snuck her crystals into the inside of a large bow feature over one shoulder. It looked summery and flirty, and the slit up the side was sexy without being too much. Daniella fretted over her choice to go with a gun-metal gray fabric constructed into a simple silhouette. The real interest in the dress came from the very cool hook collar, which was covered in crystals.
The two of them were the Top 2 looks of the night, and I suspect we'll see these two duking it out in the finale. I hope that result is the opposite of what happened last night, as Daniella won AGAIN (this is her THIRD win), while Anna looked on, discouraged. I disagreed with the decision - Anna's dress was innovative and beautiful, while Daniella's, while interesting, looked like a glorified craft project.
But I also admit that I have a bias. I think Anna's awesome. Not only is her stuff impossibly chic and daring, but she's the only designer left that I like as a human being. I begrudgingly respect that Daniella has talent, but frankly speaking, I hate her guts. She is so off-putting to me in so many ways, I cannot even tell you. She approaches Kenley Collins levels of unlikability. One of the most infuriating things in the world to me is a 20something's sense of entitlement, and Daniella just oozes it. She has since episode 1. This girl - who just finished design school - really, truly feels as though she DESERVES to make it to the finals and win this show. I always thought that you deserved things by earning them. What has Daniella earned, exactly? Besides a punch in the face, for being a 22-year-old know-it-all bitch, I mean.
Reco scored a place in the Final 4 with his dress, which was a purple/pink gauzy number featuring a weird crystal appliqu over one of the breasts. Honestly, I didn't get it. I respect Reco as a talent, but his tastes run a little cheap for me, and this looked very 1970's Studio 54. It didn't look current at all. But I'm intrigued to see what he'll do for his full collection.
That left a bottom two of Johnny and James-Paul. Truthfully, neither of those designers should still be in the competition at this point. They have both sent some truly hideous looks down the runway. (I still can't believe James-Paul walked away unscathed last week, after sending down what can only be explained as a sad-looking saggy ghost dress.) I was hoping Isaac would cut the both of them and spare us more of their faux intellectual superiority.
James-Paul's gown was made of black velvet, which became layered at the hem with gold fabric, with a crystal starburst at the belt. It didn't look nearly as bad as the judges made it seem, but while the top was simple - VERY simple - he tried to work in his fascination with three-dimensional shapes by creating that pop-out hem. I don't know about him. He really pissed me off in the challenge where they had to design for normal women, and he treated this gorgeous, regular-sized woman as though she was a goddamned heifer. It was so offensive, and it made me wonder who exactly he thinks will buy and wear his clothes. For a smart guy he's remarkably stupid.
But not as stupid as Johnny! I have disliked Johnny since episode 2, when he threw his tantrum on the runway after being called out for his shitty sewing work and his ugly designs. He's had a couple solid looks since then - LOVED his Versace-inspired dress from a few challenges ago - but he has consistently come off as a nasty, self-important dilettante who considers himself more of an artist than he actually is. And boy, did he cement that opinion last night. First he completely blew off the mini-challenge - a recurring theme for him, actually - and then rolled his eyes when the judges pointed out how poor his execution was. Then he treated his assistant (each of the designers got an eliminated contestant to help them with their looks; Johnny got stuck with Angel) like absolute shit, openly dissing her in the most nasty way possible, and then ignoring any attempts she made at helping him design his gown. Which, by the way, he had never done before. So for those of you keeping track at home, Johnny can't sew, Johnny doesn't do sportswear, Johnny doesn't do eveningwear. What exactly does Johnny do?
He copies other people's designs, apparently. And then lies and cries about it when he gets called out. At the fabric store he openly admitted to wanting to copy a look worn by Maggie Gyllenhaal at a red carpet function. And that's exactly what he did. His dress was virtually identical to the dress in question, just with a change in color (but using virtually the same print), a minor adjustment to the shoulder ruffle (but just minor), and by adding crystals to the belt (though just barely, so he didn't even do the assignment).
When the judges presented him a photo of the Maggie dress, he denied any knowledge of it. The editors helpfully cut to footage from the fabric store where he openly stated his desire to copy THAT DRESS. Then he tried to somehow pin the fault on Angel, saying she should have stopped him from doing a knock-off. Reco didn't let that shit fly, and called him out on openly ignoring Angel's notes to exactly that effect. And then in his exit interview, Johnny moaned about how it's unfair, because he didn't create a knock-off. He created a dress that was remarkably similar to an existing, notable dress. Can you even believe this guy? I mean, for real.
The fact that Johnny made it so far in the competition is shocking in and of itself. This is a man who sent out poorly constructed gym shorts worn over leggings with long fringe attached about four weeks ago. Did he make for good TV? I guess; he certainly picked up the villain mantle that Merlin ditched after like episode 2. (Although Merlin's ugly misogyny did come back in brief flashes in later episodes.) I would hope that watching this, Johnny would get a clue about how poorly he came off on this show; how he appeared like a hackish, lazy, hateful slob. But I think that's probably giving the guy too much credit. Remember that sense of entitlement that I attributed to Daniella? With Johnny, you can multiply that by like 100. At least Daniella's clothes look good.
So now we're down to the Final Four. I have no idea what happens next. This show is apparently not involved in Fashion Week at all, which is probably smart on its part. And the viewers at home will decide the final victor, which probably NOT a great idea. Reco is probably the most popular designer left (although since the other three are spectacularly boring, that's not a surprise), and he'd have to screw up royally to not take the title. And that's really a shame. Anna FTW.

I have to say, I really didn't like the show too much. And for the record, I think that having the viewing audience decide is not such a bad idea.
As for Daniella, while she does have the entitlement attitude; she is NOT as bad as Kenley Collins. If she were, (given her intense dislike of Merlin) I do not feel that ANGEL would have been the one placed in the 'bottom three' (when Daniella was given the option on which designer to place there).

I can't believe that he tried to put some of the blame on Angel. He knew exactly what he was doing. Can you believe that there's some out there that actually feel sorry for him? I don't. You cheat, you get caught- don't whine about how unfair it is that nobody let you get away with it. How stupid is he that he put out a knockoff dress in front of a bunch of fashionistas & designers & expected that nobody would call him out on it?

As Vanilla Ice said, "it's 2 different songs... da da da da da da dum... it's not the same" Ha Ha Ha!!!
So glad Johnny is gone. You did see Angel ask him a few times what did he need her to do to help. And being so rude when Isaac and Kelly came up and he mentioned them being teamed up, what a jerk! Go to all those people how are dying to give you a job, as you told them a few weeks ago when you were on the chopping block. I didn't catch the episode when Merlin got the boot.. I'm hoping to catch it in re-runs, I think it was because of that switcheroo Bravo did on us. I'm looking forward to seeing the designs. Not a fan of James-Paul either, I almost feel like the judges favored him from the beginning episode when they were so excited to see what he was working on. Not a fan of Daniella, she just annoys me, I agree with you Debrarae completely. I think Reco is just whiny, but he can sew... My hope is that the win will go to Anna.
