Last night's "Top Model" was one of those instances where it was clear from minute 1 who was going home. When boring Nijah, who I kept forgetting even existed, got tons of screen time and confessional interviews (which, improbably, made her even less interesting than when she didn't speak), her fate was all but sealed.
However, we also got a runway teach, runway challenge, and another group photo shoot (lots of those so far this cycle), so there's plenty to chew on. Miss J's runway lesson was as useless as ever - I don't doubt that he knows his stuff, but his stupid little cracks don't actually offer any real instruction to the girls. And given how bad the runway walks have been the last few cycles, it's inexcusable that a so-called "runway diva extraordinaire" is on panel, and we got the linebacker walk-off that was Sam vs. McKey in the C11 finale. Maybe there's more one-on-one coaching that we don't see, but it seemed limited to him handing Allison a book for her head and telling her to practice.
For no reason whatsoever J brought in C10's Bianca and Chantal to teach the girls about runway sharing etiquette. This is hilarious, because while Bianca can work a catwalk like nobody's business, Chantal was always a fairly poor runway model, and was most notable for tripping a man with her dress during the final show of her season. It made me wonder why Saleisha's useless ass wasn't dragged back in, since the one thing the worst winner in the history of this show could actually do well was runway. Wonder if Tyra's still trying to distance herself from that radioactive scandal....
For the challenge, the girls had to walk a runway for Jill Stuart, but the stage was full of obstacles (fire hydrants, trash cans, stuff to make it look like a New York City street) and they had to lug huge shopping bags. The only notable points were that Celia looked gorgeous opening the show - that makeover has done wonders for her - and Natalie's ego threatened to consume the entire runway as she decided to go for a dippy twirl in the middle of the runway in order to stand out from the pack. I hated it, and thought it looked seriously unprofessional. The designer is an idiot, and she loved it, so freaking Natalie won the challenge. Boo. I don't get Natalie. I don't think she's pretty, I don't think her walk is that good, and I find her irritating. I wish she'd pulled that twirly shit on the bitchy queen from last cycle who tore Sam apart because she made his runway show all about her.
The photo shoot saw the girls split into groups and sent on a double-decker bus to signature NYC neighborhoods, where they had to portray a story in their pictures. So Fo and Aminat were stock brokers on Wall Street, Celia and Sandra were nannies near Central Park, etc. Good idea, lousy execution. For the most part, at least - Fo and Aminat's photo was great, and Sandra at least looked good in hers. The rest were pretty terrible.
Since Nijah was obviously going home, there wasn't a lot of drama to eliminations. The fact that the poor thing was saddled with eye make-up that made her look like late drag superstar Divine didn't help, but really, she just had "chaff" written all over her. She landed in the Bottom 2 with Allison, who was never in any real danger. This was a chance for Tyra to employ her classic scare tactic, although Allison didn't even need it - her photo was not that bad. Certainly not worse than Kortnie's, or Teyona's public dental exam, or freaking Tahlia's excruciatingly cheesy shot. I'll be shocked if Allison isn't F6 at least.
Lastly, the callout order was total bullshit. Sandra's photo was good, but nowhere near the top of the heap. It was a profile shot for pity heaven's sake! Fo was robbed - twice, since she should have won the runway challenge, because she was a HOT BITCH in that show - and her photo was gorgeous. TAHLIA got called THIRD? You have to be kidding me. Kortnie getting called like fifth? Over London? Please.
Next week it looks like Celia tries to organize a coup to get someone out of the house, presumably Sandra. Delicious!
