Going into last night's finale, I had come to grips with the fact that Twitch would win. My friends and I had even ordered a decadent dinner -- orange chicken from Cheesecake Factory (their idea, not mine) -- to soften the blow. My official position was "Anyone but Twitch," although I was especially rooting for Joshua specifically. He had been outstanding all season long, and I can't think of a single number that he didn't perform beautifully.
And so: YAAAAAAAAY! Joshua won!
In a surprise move, the top guy AND top girl got a prize, and Katee walked away with $50,000 (good on her). Katee and Josh are, I think, the first original couple to ever make to the final four. So that was special.
Overall I thought it was a largely entertaining finale. Most of the "favorite" dances weren't as good the second time as they were the first, with the exception of Will/Katee's pas de deux, which was breathtaking. They had screwed it up the first time and I'm glad they got a second chance at it. I also enjoyed seeing Nigel tap dance with the kids from the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (he really kept up!), Mary Murphy dance the samba (her legs are amazing), and the "So You Think You Can Dance" all-stars. It was a treat to see some of my old faves again. I just wish that segment had gone on longer. I could have done without the popper battle, which totally fizzled. I felt bad for the kid that got one vote.
Overall, ignoring the faulty camera work (was someone drinking before the show?) and the endless judging banter (can we please get rid of Lil C next year?), I thought it was a fantastic finale for a fairly underwhelming season. Here's to hoping next year's Top 20 is more inspiring.
In the meantime, bring on the Olympics!
